No cause for alarm – Minister of state for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Ojukwu, visits Ghana over ‘Nigerians must go’ protests

The Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, has traveled to Ghana following recent protests by some Ghanaians asking that Nigerians be deported.

Over the weekend, a group of Ghanaians, mostly local market traders, held a protest where they demanded that Nigerians be sent back home. They claimed Nigerians were not behaving in line with Ghanaian values. Some of them accused Nigerians of causing problems and being linked to criminal acts. The protesters carried placards and other items to express their frustration.

Speaking to journalists after meeting with Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, on Wednesday, July 30, Bianca Ojukwu said that videos from the protests had gone viral and caused fear among Nigerians. She explained that her visit was necessary to understand the situation in person and to calm tensions.

On his part, the Ghanaian Foreign Affairs Minister confirmed that the matter is being taken seriously. He said the ministry has already met with leaders of the Nigerian community in Ghana to find a peaceful way forward.

Bianca Ojukwu’s visit shows that Nigeria is concerned about how its citizens are treated abroad. Both countries are working together to make sure the issue is resolved peacefully. Nigerians in Ghana are advised to stay calm, as there’s no cause for alarm.
