President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday received the body of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari at Umaru Musa Yar’Adua International Airport in Katsina. Buhari’s body arrived from London, where he passed away on Sunday at the age of 82.
The late President’s remains were flown alongside Vice President Kashim Shettima and top officials from the Federal Government.
At the airport, they were received by Tinubu, Katsina State Governor Dikko Umar Radda, Buhari’s family members, and other Federal Executive Council members in a solemn atmosphere.
Buhari, who ruled Nigeria from 2015 to 2023, died in the United Kingdom after a short illness while undergoing medical treatment.
His burial is planned for later today (Tuesday) in his hometown, Daura, Katsina State, following Islamic traditions.
Soldiers and Islamic clerics were present to conduct the official welcoming ceremony.
The mood in Katsina was filled with grief as political leaders, traditional chiefs, and citizens paid their respects and reflected on Buhari’s years as a military ruler and democratic President.
Earlier, the Presidency had set up a nine-member committee to handle the burial plans. First Lady Oluremi Tinubu was also at the airport to receive the body.
Many dignitaries from different parts of Nigeria and foreign diplomats are expected in Daura later today to take part in the funeral prayers and burial rites.
