The body of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has landed at the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua International Airport in Katsina State under tight security, as many mourners watched with heavy hearts.
The ex-president, who died on Sunday at a UK hospital at the age of 82, will be laid to rest later today in his hometown, Daura, following Islamic burial traditions.
A nine-member team, set up by President Bola Tinubu to manage the funeral, was at the airport to receive the remains.
This committee is made up of top government officials, religious figures, and members of the Nigerian Armed Forces.
Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, who arrived earlier wearing black attire, was also present to honor the late leader.
A solemn atmosphere filled the air as military personnel performed a short ceremonial salute before the convoy carrying Buhari’s body headed to Daura, where final burial arrangements are ongoing.
The Federal Government had earlier announced a period of national mourning, and tributes have been pouring in from Nigeria and beyond, celebrating Buhari’s time as a former military ruler and two-term civilian president.
