A sad event happened in Borno State on Friday night, June 20, as a suicide bomber attacked a small food joint in Konduga Local Government Area. Reports say that many people lost their lives in the explosion.
The police confirmed the incident, saying it took place around 10pm. The spokesperson for the Borno State Police Command, ASP Nahum Daso, told reporters that they are still checking how many people actually died. He also said that an investigation has started to find out more about the attack.
“Yesterday, around 22:00 in Konduga, just unfortunately, somebody invaded a gathering with a bomb, killing over 10 persons. We have deployed our EOD experts, together with the military and other security agencies, to the town. Investigation is ongoing to ascertain what actually or really happened. The detail is still scanty.”he said
Meanwhile, a counter-terrorism expert named Zagazola Makama shared more shocking details. He said that 24 people were killed in the blast and several others were badly injured. He also revealed that the attack was carried out by a female suicide bomber.
“The Police sources said the explosion resulted in the fatal wounding of 24 persons, both male and female, while an unspecified number of others sustained varying degrees of injuries. The body of the suicide bomber was torn apart by the blast, with only the head recovered.”
Following the incident, a joint team comprising Military and Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (EOD-CBRN) units, Tactical Teams, Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), and local hunters visited the scene.
The area was cordoned off and thoroughly searched for other potential explosive devices, but none were found. Normalcy has since been restored to the area.
The injured victims were evacuated to the of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH), where they are receiving treatment, while the corpses of the deceased were also deposited at the same hospital. Medical personnel on duty certified the dead victims,” Makama said
Makama added that authorities are working to identify the victims. Once this is done, the bodies will be given to their families so they can carry out proper burial ceremonies based on their religious beliefs.
This tragic incident has once again raised concerns about security in the Northeast region of Nigeria. Many people are calling for stronger safety measures to protect innocent lives from terrorist attacks.
