The Police Commissioner of Cross River State, Olusegun Omosanyin, has said that reports claiming dead bodies are lying around in the Etono and Biakpan communities are not true.
These two communities have been fighting for the past two months because of land issues and arguments about which family is the oldest in the area.
People from both communities said that more than 50 people have been killed and many buildings destroyed during the fight, which has lasted for many years.
Some witnesses and police officers even said they saw some dead bodies that were starting to rot.
However, in a private talk with DAILY POST, Commissioner Omosanyin and a lawyer named Mba Ukweni, who comes from Biakpan, both denied that any dead bodies were lying around.
Mba Ukweni sent a message saying, “There are no dead bodies lying around in either community.”
The Police Commissioner also said, “Nothing like this has happened. These reports are fake news. If anyone has photos or proof, they should show it.”
He added that many meetings have taken place to try to stop the fight between the two groups.
Omosanyin confirmed, “My officers are still present and working in the area.”
He did not want to comment on claims that one side is still hiring armed fighters to help with the conflict.
Earlier, the Police Commissioner said both communities had gathered many weapons, but he promised that his team would collect those arms.
