Nigerian comedian Basketmouth recently shared his thoughts after the Senate revealed a huge financial issue involving the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL). According to the Senate, trillions of naira are missing from the company’s records.
The Senate Committee on Public Accounts, led by Senator Aliyu Wadada, described the situation as very serious and hard to ignore. During a meeting on June 18, NNPCL’s Chief Financial Officer, Dapo Segun, faced lawmakers who pointed out the lack of proper documents explaining large payments made for legal and auditing services.
The Senate noted that these payments had no clear details or evidence to support them. More troubling, they said, were the figures showing over N210 trillion in receivables between 2017 and 2023, which appeared to be either unaccounted for or not matching previous audit reports.
The committee explained that their concerns were based on facts found in the official audit documents from NNPCL, not from rumours or guesses. Reacting to the news, Basketmouth posted on social media saying, “Good thing I am not God. Thunder go don finish by now.” His funny but sharp comment echoed the anger and disappointment many Nigerians feel about how public funds are handled.
