The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has warned Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, that he may publish his name if he hasn’t paid his ground rent.
Wike said this during the opening ceremony of a newly completed road in Abuja. The road, called Collector Road CN2 (Zakari A. Kyari Street), links major areas in Mabushi and Katampe, including the Judges Quarters.
He explained that publishing Kalu’s name wouldn’t be to shame him. Instead, he said the purpose is to remind everyone that the money from ground rent is needed for development work in the city.
Speaking directly to the Deputy Speaker, Wike said: “Mr. Deputy Speaker, if you own land and haven’t paid your ground rent, your name will be published.”
He made it clear that this was not about embarrassing anyone, but about making sure enough money is available to fund important projects. According to him, most of the expensive homes in Abuja are built by wealthy people, so they must contribute through their rent payments.
Wike added that with this money, the government can keep building roads and infrastructure to benefit everyone in the capital city.
