Deeper Life Bible Church has reacted strongly after several of its church buildings were demolished by the Lagos State government. The church says these actions have disturbed its normal worship and religious gatherings.
In a public statement shared by its legal team, Nojim Tairu & Co., the church described the demolitions as a deliberate attack on its legal and peaceful activities. They believe the destruction of their places of worship was unfair and possibly targeted.
“Over the past months, our church has faced an unsettling pattern of interference from certain state agencies, resulting in harassment, threats of demolition, and restrictions on our places of worship and community centers,” the statement read.
The statement listed three main church locations that were affected. The Chronicle Yaba Church was said to be pulled down by LAMATA. The Olorunishola Church was reportedly demolished by LASBCA, and the Lawanson Church was taken down by the Surulere Local Government. The church sees this as a serious violation of their rights as a religious body.
“These actions not only infringe on the rights of our congregation but also raise serious concerns about religious freedom, property rights, and due process in Lagos State,” it added.
Deeper Life has called on Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and other relevant authorities in Lagos to step in. They are asking for a full investigation and for the right steps to be taken to correct the situation.
“Deeper Life Bible Church has always abided by the law and promoted peace among all communities. These recent developments, however, necessitate urgent attention to prevent further erosion of public trust and religious harmony.”
The church is also asking for support from the general public, other churches, legal experts, and international faith groups. They want people to join in their call for justice and the protection of freedom to worship.
“We remain committed to our mission of spiritual growth, humanitarian service, and social development. We will not be deterred by these challenges and are prepared to explore all legal avenues to uphold our rights and preserve our sanctuaries.”
Despite the situation, the church says it will continue to follow peace and the law. They are hopeful that the government will listen and ensure their rights are respected.
