Elon Musk and Donald Trump used to be close, but their friendship seems to have ended. Now, both men are publicly attacking each other. Recently, Musk claimed that Trump’s name is included in the Epstein files, which he believes is the real reason the U.S. government has not released all the documents.
Musk made this statement in a post on X (formerly known as Twitter) on the night of June 5. He wrote that Trump is mentioned in the Epstein files and ended the message with “Have a nice day, DJT!”—a message that seemed sarcastic.
The Epstein files refer to documents held by the U.S. Department of Justice about Jeffrey Epstein, a convicted sex offender who was accused of arranging illegal activities involving underage girls for several wealthy and powerful people. These records have long been the subject of public interest, but they have never been fully released.
Elon Musk was once a top advisor to Trump. He also led a department called the Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, which was created to shrink the size of the government. While heading DOGE, thousands of federal jobs were cut, and the department quickly became controversial.
Musk stepped down from his government role last week and soon after began criticizing Trump’s policies. He called Trump’s most recent tax and spending plan a “disgusting abomination.”
Trump replied to Musk’s comments through his Truth Social platform. He said that Musk didn’t quit but was asked to leave. Trump also claimed that Musk was becoming hard to deal with and said he had gone “CRAZY!”
Their public back-and-forth has gained a lot of attention, marking a clear end to what was once a strong political partnership.
