Russia has said that former U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent comments about Russian President Vladimir Putin won’t stop current talks about a prisoner swap between the two countries.
Over the weekend, Trump called Putin “crazy” after Russia launched its largest drone attack on Ukraine since the war began in February 2022. Even with these strong words, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said the two nations are still working on a possible prisoner exchange.
Peskov explained that it’s normal for Russia and the U.S. to have disagreements. He said both sides still want to follow through with the agreements they’ve made and are continuing their work. He added that Russia respects the willingness on both sides to keep going with the talks.
Last week, reports said that Trump and Putin had a two-hour phone call. During the conversation, they talked about a possible exchange involving nine prisoners from each country. A Russian official, Yuri Ushakov, confirmed the call happened but didn’t say who the prisoners might be.
Since Trump returned to the White House in January, there have already been a few prisoner exchanges. U.S. officials often say that Russia arrests American citizens for political reasons, just to use them in swaps for Russians jailed in other countries.
In the latest exchange, Russia freed Ksenia Karelina, a woman with both U.S. and Russian citizenship. She had been sentenced to 12 years for treason after giving about $50 to a Ukrainian charity. In return, the U.S. released Arthur Petrov, a man with German and Russian citizenship, who was accused of trying to send U.S.-made electronics to Russian military companies.
