Benue varsity debunks reports of missing N2bn

Benue State University (BSU) in Makurdi has denied reports that N2 billion went missing from the school’s funds. The university made it clear that the story was not true.

Speaking to journalists on Monday, the school’s Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), Professor Simon Terver, said the claims were false and aimed at misleading the public.

This response followed a court case filed by the university’s ICT Director against Mr. Henry Ibya, a journalist with Aljazirah Newspaper. The case involves claims of defamation, cyberstalking, and spreading false information.

The journalist, Mr. Ibya, reported that BSU lost N2 billion because of a problem with its ICT system. He also said the ICT Director was suspended so the issue could be investigated.

On April 25, 2025, Mr. Ibya was arrested by the police and taken to court. He was then sent to the Makurdi correctional centre.

After almost a week in custody, the court granted him bail. The case has now been moved to July 2025 for further hearing.

During the press briefing, Professor Terver explained more about the situation. He said many students were not paying their school fees. This was due to financial hardship and because some people see paying school fees as a kind of tax.

He added that many students are attending classes without paying their fees. However, the university is handling the issue carefully to avoid any unrest.

A committee is currently checking how many students have paid their fees. Professor Terver made it clear that this is not an investigation about missing money.

“There is no missing N2 billion,” he said. “The committee is only handling administrative matters about student fee payments.”
