IG deploys special anti-bandit squads nationwide

To deal with the growing violence in Nigeria, the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has sent out special police squads across the country. These teams will be on standby and ready to act at any time.

This decision comes after recent deadly attacks by bandits in states like Kwara, Benue, and Sokoto. Other states such as Plateau and Enugu have also reported more attacks in the past weeks.

During a meeting with police squadron commanders in Abuja, the police chief made it clear that each Police Mobile Force (PMF) unit must keep at least one team fully armed and ready to respond quickly to emergencies.

He said the PMF was meant to be a fast and strong team that can act in dangerous situations. Every squadron must be ready to help local police teams whenever needed.

The Inspector-General also said that all squadrons must send one team for training every three months. These trainings will focus not only on fighting skills but also on professionalism, ethics, and respect for human rights.

To improve performance, the size and structure of the squadrons will be changed. The goal is to make them more efficient and quick to respond. He warned that commanders will now be held responsible for the behavior of their team members.

He also reminded everyone that mobile police officers will no longer be used for private escort duties. He explained that this weakens their ability to fight crime. Instead, the police will now focus on stopping violent crimes and protecting national security.

Finally, he stressed that discipline must return to the PMF. He said the mobile police carry a big responsibility and must always act with courage and integrity.
