Governor Umar Bago of Niger State has reversed his decision to target people with dreadlocks following public outcry.
The governor had previously ordered security forces to arrest individuals wearing dreadlocks, cut their hair, and fine them in Minna, the state capital. He described these haircuts as “unacceptable” and urged security agencies to take immediate action.
However, after facing strong criticism from civil rights groups, human rights advocates, and the general public, Governor Bago clarified his statement.
In a public address, he explained that his initial remarks were aimed at addressing criminal elements who were allegedly using dreadlocks to hide their involvement in cult activities. He reassured the public that there was no issue with people having dreadlocks, and the earlier statement was misunderstood.
Governor Bago emphasized that Niger State welcomes everyone, including those with dreadlocks, and invited investors and professionals to the state, regardless of their appearance.
