Argentina’s President, Javier Milei, has called Lionel Messi the greatest footballer of all time. He stated that no player has ever impressed him as much as Messi and described the Inter Miami player as “superlative.”
This statement is likely to spark debates among football fans in Argentina. Many people still view the late Diego Maradona as the country’s most iconic football legend, and the comparison between him and Messi remains a divisive topic.
During an interview on the Nuera podcast, President Milei shared his admiration for Messi. He mentioned being a loyal supporter of the football star, even during times when the media was critical of Messi’s performances.
“I have never in my life seen anyone play like he does,” Milei said. “He is a superlative player. I am a crazy fan of Messi. When all the local media were attacking him, there were videos of me defending him as the best player of all time.”
Messi’s career has not always been smooth, especially with the Argentine national team. Despite achieving great success at the club level, he faced criticism for not replicating that success with his country. He endured major disappointments, including losing the 2014 World Cup final to Germany and consecutive Copa America finals to Chile in 2015 and 2016.
In 2016, Messi briefly retired from international football but later returned. His determination led to a historic victory in 2021, when he guided Argentina to win the Copa America, his first major title with the national team, silencing many critics
