A legal group called the New Civil Liberties Alliance (NCLA), known for its conservative stance, has filed a lawsuit against former President Donald Trump’s administration. The group wants to stop new tariffs that Trump placed on products coming from China.
The lawsuit was submitted to a federal court in Florida. NCLA says Trump went beyond his legal powers when he used emergency laws to raise the tariffs. These new tariffs were announced on Wednesday, with an additional 34% added to the already existing 20%, making it a total of 54%.
According to NCLA, Trump used a law meant for emergencies—the International Emergency Economic Powers Act—in a way that Congress never approved. They argue this law doesn’t allow a president to make such wide tariff changes without following strict rules and getting Congress involved.
Andrew Morris, a lawyer for NCLA, said Trump misused his emergency powers and ignored the proper role of Congress in making trade decisions. The group filed the case on behalf of a small business called Simplified, based in Florida.
The lawsuit is asking a judge to stop the tariffs from taking effect and to cancel the changes Trump made to the U.S. tariff system. NCLA says that any tariff changes must be based on detailed investigations and must follow strict legal steps.
As of now, no one from the White House has commented on the case.
