A group of opposition lawmakers has praised Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara for respecting the Supreme Court’s ruling on local government elections.
In a statement on Sunday, opposition spokesperson Hon. Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere commended Fubara for appointing Heads of Personnel to oversee local councils, as directed by the court.
The lawmakers believe this shows the governor’s dedication to democracy, even in the face of opposition from supporters of former Governor and current FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike.
The lawmakers described Fubara’s actions as proof of his respect for the law and democracy. They also addressed the controversy surrounding the 27 pro-Wike lawmakers who left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2023.
According to them, these lawmakers remain “sacked” until higher courts make a final decision on their defection.
“The Court of Appeal and Supreme Court have not ruled on their case yet. Until then, their seats remain vacant,” Ugochinyere said.
Ugochinyere also announced that the opposition group would make an official statement after obtaining the Certified True Copy (CTC) of the Supreme Court judgment.
He urged residents to remain calm, assuring them that the opposition is committed to legal and peaceful solutions to the crisis.
The Rivers political situation remains tense, but Fubara’s decision to follow the court’s ruling has earned him praise from opposition lawmakers. Many now look forward to further legal clarifications on the issues at hand.
