Update: FG demands probe into Nigerian footballer Abubakar Lawal’s death in Uganda

The Nigerian government has called for a full autopsy and thorough investigation into the sudden and mysterious death of Nigerian footballer, Abubakar Lawal, in Uganda.

In a statement on Tuesday, the Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, described Lawal’s death as “pathetic and suspicious.” She emphasized the need for a transparent investigation, ensuring no cover-up in the process.

“The Nigerian government will demand a proper and clear investigation,” she said. “This is a very sad incident. May his soul rest in peace, and may God give his family strength.”

The Kajjansi Police Division in Uganda is currently investigating the circumstances of his tragic death. Reports say Lawal, who played for Vipers Sports Club, allegedly fell from the third floor of Voicemall Shopping Arcade on the morning of February 24, 2025.

He was rushed to Entebbe Referral Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Authorities are reviewing CCTV footage and questioning individuals to understand what really happened. The Nigerian government has vowed to follow up and ensure justice is serve.
