Doechii’s inspiring journey from being unemployed to winning a Grammy has gone viral. Less than five years ago, she lost her job and had to start over. Now, she’s a Grammy-winning rapper with a powerful message for those chasing their dreams.
In 2020, Doechii, whose real name is Jaylah Ji’mya Hickmon, shared a video online revealing she had been fired. Instead of feeling defeated, she decided to focus on her music career.
She planned to visit recording studios and record labels to look for internships and opportunities.
“I have nothing to lose,” she said in the video. “No job, no place, no children. Who cares? I’ll figure it out.”
Her determination paid off. In 2021, she caught the attention of Top Dawg Entertainment president Anthony “Moosa” Tiffith Jr., becoming the label’s first female rapper.
Fast forward to February 2, 2025—Doechii won her first Grammy for Best Rap Album with Alligator Bites Never Heal. She was also nominated for Best New Artist and Best Rap Performance.
During the Grammy ceremony, she took the stage with her mother and gave an emotional speech.
“I put my heart and soul into this mixtape,” she said through tears.
“I went through so much. I dedicated myself to sobriety, and God told me I would be rewarded.”
Doechii also had an uplifting message for Black women watching her journey.
“You can do it. Anything is possible,”
she said;
“Don’t let anyone tell you that you don’t belong, that you’re too dark, too loud, or not smart enough. You are exactly who you need to be.
Doechii’s success story is a reminder that setbacks don’t define your future. Her journey from being fired to winning a Grammy proves that hard work, faith, and perseverance can lead to incredible achievements.
