The Federal Government of Nigeria is planning to spend N8 billion in 2025 to help educate citizens on the importance of paying their electricity bills on time. This initiative, aimed at improving the country’s power sector, was announced by the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, during a discussion of the ministry’s budget before the National Assembly on January 13.
Adelabu emphasized that the campaign will reach Nigerians through various media platforms, including social media, digital tools, and traditional print media. He explained that many Nigerians still need guidance to understand that the power sector is a valuable national resource, and it is essential to take care of it by ensuring timely payment of electricity bills.
The goal of this campaign is to raise awareness about the significance of the power sector, and the government hopes that it will help protect and strengthen this national asset.
“We are a people of over 200 million strength. So we need to go through all the loopholes, through social media, through digital media, through the print media, to actually orientate and do this advocacy. So we have N8 billion.
In terms of advocacy, we believe that our people need to be re-educated. They need to be re-orientated to know that the power assets are national assets, and we should all jointly own it.
Our people need to know that they should avoid power theft. When they see something, they must say something. Our people need to know that they must pay their bills regularly. All these need to be passed across. We believe that the power sector needs to do a lot of advocacy, re-orientation and re-education of our people” Adelabu said
