The Delta State Police Command has arrested a woman, Blessing Ibuku, for allegedly killing her 10-month-old baby, Prevail Jonathan, by throwing the child into a river.

The incident occurred on November 31, 2024, but the case was reported on December 4, 2024, when the child was declared missing. While Blessing was being questioned at the police station, officers received information that a child’s body had been discovered floating in the Aviara community river.

When the body was brought to the station, it was confirmed to be that of the missing baby, Prevail Jonathan.

During the police investigation, Blessing admitted to throwing her baby into the river. She revealed that her friends and other women had mocked her, saying her child did not have a father, which pushed her to take the drastic step.

The Delta State Commissioner of Police, CP Abaniwonda Olufemi, made this known during a press briefing in Asaba on Tuesday, December 17. He stated that the suspect would be charged in court soon.

This tragic incident sheds light on the devastating effects of societal pressure and emotional distress, which can lead individuals to make irreversible decisions. The police have promised to ensure justice is served.
