The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has successfully returned 21 stolen luxury cars, valued at over ₦1.8 billion, to Canada. These vehicles were smuggled into Nigeria by a criminal network, but thanks to a coordinated operation, they were intercepted and will soon be handed back to Canadian authorities.
Customs Comptroller General Adewale Adeniyi explained that Nigeria has unfortunately become a major hub for stolen cars in West Africa. Syndicates exploit the country’s ports and borders to smuggle vehicles from North America, Europe, and beyond. This illegal activity hurts Nigeria’s economy, undermines security, and tarnishes its global reputation.
To combat the smuggling of vehicles, the NCS launched Operation Hot Wheels. This initiative brought together the EFCC, Canadian law enforcement, and international partners to share intelligence, conduct surveillance, and disrupt smuggling rings.
One of the key successes of the operation involved the interception of a suspicious shipment at Onne Port in Rivers State. While it was declared as containing used vehicles and spare parts, Customs officers discovered three stolen 2021 Toyota Highlanders and other undeclared luxury cars.
The operation also recovered other high-value vehicles, including a Lamborghini Huracan and a Mercedes-AMG GT, both intercepted in Lagos and worth a combined ₦630.8 million.
Mr. Adeniyi highlighted the importance of international cooperation and advanced technology in the operation’s success. By integrating global databases and working closely with agencies like INTERPOL, the NCS was able to quickly identify and recover stolen cars.
“This shows the power of partnerships in dismantling global crime networks,” Adeniyi said. He emphasized that such efforts will help make Nigeria a trusted player in international trade and law enforcement.
As the recovered vehicles are prepared for return to Canada, the NCS has reaffirmed its stance against smuggling. Mr. Adeniyi stressed that Nigeria will not be a route for stolen or illegal goods, applauding the dedication of Customs officers for their vigilance and professionalism.
The success of Operation Hot Wheels marks a major milestone in 2024 for the NCS, which plans to further strengthen its global partnerships and modernize its operations to protect Nigeria’s economy and borders.
