The Centre for the Promotion of Private Enterprise (CPPE) has advised the Federal Government to urgently establish a National Farm Price Stabilisation and Farmer Income Protection Framework to tackle rising food prices and strengthen food security in Nigeria. The group says unstable prices, weak market systems, and policy uncertainty are hurting farmers and discouraging long-term private investment in agriculture.

Speaking through its Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Muda Yusuf, CPPE explained that the proposed framework should reduce uncertainty in the food market, protect farmers’ earnings, and attract private capital across the agricultural value chain. He stressed that the system must be rules-based, targeted, and market-friendly, not driven by excessive government control. Yusuf also noted that digital tools should play a key role to improve transparency, efficiency, and accountability in pricing and farmer support.

Yusuf warned that Nigeria’s food challenges cannot be solved through heavy government intervention alone. Instead, he said attention should be placed on fixing key market problems such as poor storage, weak transport systems, limited access to finance, and lack of reliable market data. According to him, these issues expose farmers to post-harvest losses and income shocks, while also discouraging investment in large-scale farming and agro-processing.

He added that a well-structured price stabilisation framework would help protect farmers from sharp price changes, ensure steady income, and improve food availability and affordability for consumers. With food inflation still high despite recent reports, CPPE insists that long-term, market-driven policies are needed to restore confidence and achieve sustainable food security in Nigeria.
