Climate change is a growing threat to stability and equality in Nigeria, especially in Northern regions. Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani, recently spoke about this pressing issue at a regional conference on climate change-related conflicts in Northern Nigeria. Leaders from 19 Northern states, religious figures, and various organizations attended the event, where Governor Sani highlighted how climate change extends beyond just environmental damage, affecting security and the economy.

Governor Sani explained that rising temperatures, unpredictable weather, and severe storms are now everyday problems. Issues like desertification—where fertile land turns barren—are worsening, rivers are drying up, and forests are being cleared at an alarming rate. Recent floods across Nigeria, including in Kaduna State, show how urgent the climate crisis has become.

“These environmental shifts,” he said, “are disrupting livelihoods, displacing communities, and intensifying competition for limited resources like water, farmland, and food.” This scarcity is leading to rising tensions, especially between farmers and herders who are competing for land and resources, often resulting in conflict.

In Northern Nigeria, where most people depend on farming or herding, climate change is hitting hard. Farmers face poor harvests due to unfavorable weather, while herders struggle with livestock diseases and scarce grazing land. Governor Sani emphasized the importance of resilience, urging communities to work together to develop solutions that can help them address immediate needs while also preparing for future climate challenges.

He called on people, communities, and governments to focus on resilience—anticipating, preparing for, and adapting to the effects of climate change. With this approach, Nigeria can better protect its communities and resources without compromising its future stability and growth.
