APC to Punish Obono-Obla for Demanding Party Chairman’s Removal and Insulting Governor

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Cross River State is set to discipline Chief Okoi Obono-Obla, a former presidential aide, following his controversial remarks. Obono-Obla had called for the removal of Barrister Alphonsus Eba, the APC state chairman, and Senator Bassey Otu, the governor.

In a statement authorized by the party chairman, Eba, the APC disowned Obono-Obla, accusing him of incitement and attempting to divide the party. The situation escalated when Obono-Obla threatened to take legal action against Eba, accusing him of financial mismanagement, causing party divisions, and misusing relief materials meant for the state’s vulnerable population.

Obono-Obla argued that Eba and his team only distributed a small fraction of the 10,000 bags of rice sent by the federal government, keeping the rest for close allies. He also criticized Eba for attacking President Bola Tinubu’s leadership on social media, saying it was inappropriate for the state chairman to publicly criticize the president’s handling of economic issues.

In response, APC Publicity Secretary, Hon. Edem, stated that Obono-Obla is creating unnecessary conflicts because his nominees for political appointments did not succeed. The party believes Obono-Obla is acting out of frustration and has condemned his actions.

Hon. Edem said in a statement,

“The party stoutly frustrated his plans against the Governor by not allowing him to truncate the ongoing peaceful process for a free, fair LGA elections.

“That is why he is trying to tarnish the good image of the party and the governor.

“In pursuit of that, he sent messages to convene a meeting which he lacks the power under the APC constitution to do and when the state chairman stopped him before the party officially issued a circular to that effect, he got mad because he has a hidden agenda.

“Any further insult on the party or the Governor from him will attract disciplinary action against him.

“By strict definition of Article 9 of APC constitution, he is not a member of our party, maybe he wants us to officially pronounce that,”
