Police Stop Two Suicide Attempts on Third Mainland Bridge

Officers from the Lagos State Police Command stopped two people from trying to end their lives on the Third Mainland Bridge.

The first incident involved a 65-year-old blind man, Ewenla Adetomiwa, who was saved after he tried to jump into the lagoon around 2:30 p.m. on September 4, 2024.

The Lagos State Police spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the events on Sunday, September 9, in a statement to Punch.

Reports show that the man had brought his two children to the bridge, planning to die so the government would take care of them after his death.

However, people passing by noticed what he was about to do and quickly stepped in to stop him before he could jump into the lagoon.

“A distress call came in that a man with his two children was trying to jump into the lagoon on the Third Mainland Bridge,” the police spokesperson explained.

The police were alerted by a kind passerby who called the control room. A team of officers went to the scene and found the man, who lived in Ikorodu, with his children.

The police took the man and his two kids, a 16-year-old girl and a 12-year-old boy, to the station. During questioning, the man admitted he wanted to end his life so the government could take care of his children after he was gone.

In another similar case, the spokesperson shared that on August 30, 2024, an 18-year-old boy named Elijah, who was believed to have mental health issues, was also stopped from jumping into the lagoon.

The police reached out to the boy’s family and handed him over to them after the rescue.
