In a shocking and tragic incident in Sapele, Delta State, the proprietress of His Majesty Group of Schools, Mrs. Fatima Umukoro, was allegedly killed by her 25-year-old son, Emmanuel Umukoro, on the night of September 8, 2024.
Mrs. Umukoro was not only a respected school owner but also the wife of Rev. Prince Umukoro, a well-known pastor at Victory Family Assembly International (VIFA) in Sapele. The tragic loss has left the community in shock.
Struggles with Mental Health and Addiction
According to reports, Emmanuel had been struggling with severe mental health challenges, which were reportedly worsened by substance abuse. Despite undergoing rehabilitation, he continued to face difficulties managing his addiction, leading to unpredictable violent behavior.
Neighbors revealed that on the night of the incident, Emmanuel allegedly attacked his mother with an axe and set her body on fire. Witnesses say that around 10 p.m., the gate to the Umukoro residence was unusually left open, raising suspicions among neighbors and passersby.
The Terrifying Discovery
Upon entering the house, witnesses were met with a horrific sight. They discovered a fire blazing inside the house and the lifeless body of Mrs. Umukoro, burned beyond recognition. Neighbors recalled seeing Emmanuel drive out of the compound at high speed around 8:30 p.m. in his mother’s car.
Arrest and Investigation
Emmanuel’s erratic behavior led to his arrest by the police along Sapele-Warri Road as he attempted to flee to an unknown location. The State Police Command has confirmed his arrest, but they have stated that investigations are ongoing to determine his involvement in the crime.
SP Bright Edafe, the spokesperson for the police, said, “The son is in custody now, but we can’t confirm yet if he killed her. Investigations are ongoing.”
