The wait is almost over, as the Supreme Court of Nigeria prepares to hand down its long-awaited judgments on the Bayelsa and Kogi governorship election disputes this Friday, August 23, marking a significant milestone in the country’s electoral process.
On Monday, the Supreme Court listened to arguments from counsel representing the candidates embroiled in the disputes and withheld its judgments. Nevertheless, the Justice Garba Lawal-led panel has informed the litigants that the court’s definitive ruling is now prepared and will be unveiled on Friday.
Barrister Tunde Falola, legal representative for Timipre Sylvia, the All Progressives Congress (APC) gubernatorial candidate in Bayelsa State, has confirmed that the Supreme Court has notified them of its impending judgment delivery.
The Bayelsa governorship election dispute involves Douye Diri of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who was declared the winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), among others.
In Kogi State, the contentious issue pits Usman Ahmed Ododo, the declared winner and APC candidate, against his challenger, Muritala Yakubu Ajaka of the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
It’s worth noting that both Douye Diri and Usman Ahmed Ododo had previously emerged victorious at their respective State Governorship Election Petition Tribunals and subsequently at the Court of Appeal in Abuja, before the matters were escalated to the Supreme Court for final determination.
