Abba Kyari, has been released from Kuje Prison in Abuja after 27 months

Former head of the Force Intelligence Response Team, Abba Kyari, has been released from Kuje Prison in Abuja.

A Federal High Court in Abuja granted him two weeks of bail on May 22, 2024, to allow him to bury his mother, who passed away on May 5. Kyari, a suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police, had been in jail for 27 months.

Adamu Duza, spokesperson for the FCT Command of the Nigeria Correctional Service, confirmed that Kyari was released after meeting his bail conditions.

Duza said on Friday, “DCP Kyari has met his bail conditions and has been released today.”

Kyari was arrested on February 14, 2022, by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency for alleged involvement in an international drug ring.

Kyari and four members of the Police Intelligence Response Team—Sunday Ubia, Bawa James, Simon Agirigba, and John Nuhu—were charged on March 7, 2022.

Two other suspects, Chibunna Umeibe and Emeka Ezenwanne, arrested at Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu, were also charged. Umeibe and Ezenwanne pleaded guilty and were convicted, while Kyari and the IRT members pleaded not guilty.
