On a significant Sunday, Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru swore in the 13 newly elected Local Government Area (LGA) chairmen at the Christian Ecumenical Centre in Abakaliki. During this event, Governor Nwifuru delivered a powerful message to the chairmen, emphasizing their autonomy and the weight of their responsibilities.
The governor highlighted that with their new roles, the chairmen now have both financial and administrative autonomy. He encouraged them to rise to the occasion and effectively manage their councils while ensuring that they remain committed to serving the people and stakeholders in their areas. Nwifuru stressed the importance of maintaining peace and unity across the state by keeping key stakeholders—such as ward councillors, traditional rulers, and other government appointees—satisfied and engaged.
“You are now autonomous both financially and administratively,” Nwifuru said, expressing his support and that of other state stakeholders, including his wife. He further warned that any missteps could lead to serious consequences, hinting that the governor himself would take action if necessary, though subtly and silently.
Governor Nwifuru also advised the chairmen to focus on the ongoing infrastructural development within the state, emphasizing that Ebonyi is still in need of significant improvements. He urged them to be prudent and assertive in managing their resources, making sure that their efforts contribute positively to the state’s growth.
In addition to these points, the governor cautioned against the imposition of traditional rulers who lack a deep understanding of local customs and traditions. He stressed that selecting the wrong individuals for these roles could harm the state’s progress.
In their remarks, several key figures, including Comrade Chinedu Ogah, and representatives from the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), expressed their gratitude to Governor Nwifuru for granting local government autonomy. They praised the governor’s decision, viewing it as a positive step for the state.
This swearing-in marks a new chapter for Ebonyi’s local governance, with expectations that the newly elected chairmen will uphold their responsibilities and contribute to the state’s continued development.
