Sol Bamba, Former Footballer and Cardiff City Captain, Passes Away at 39

It is with deep sadness that the football world mourns the passing of Sol Bamba, a former Cardiff City captain and Ivorian defender, who has tragically died at the age of 39. Sol Bamba, who had an illustrious career playing for clubs such as Leicester City, Leeds United, and Middlesbrough, was serving as the head coach of Turkish team Adanaspor at the time of his death.

On Friday, Sol Bamba fell ill ahead of a football match in Turkey. He was immediately taken to Manisa Celal Bayar University Hospital, where doctors fought to save him. Unfortunately, despite their efforts, Bamba passed away. His club, Adanaspor, confirmed the heartbreaking news on Saturday evening. In their statement, they expressed their condolences to Bamba’s family and everyone in the football community who had the privilege of knowing him.

Sol Bamba’s football career was nothing short of remarkable. He was a central figure in Cardiff City’s promotion to the Premier League in 2018 under the management of Neil Warnock. Before joining Cardiff, Bamba had played for other notable clubs, including Leicester City and Leeds United. He also spent time at Middlesbrough, where he reunited with Neil Warnock after his recovery from cancer.

In January 2021, Bamba was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin lymphoma, a type of cancer that affects the immune system. His diagnosis was a shock to the football community, but Bamba showed incredible strength and resilience during his treatment. Just four months later, he announced that he was cancer-free, a moment that brought joy and relief to his fans and loved ones.

After his recovery, Bamba continued his football journey, focusing on coaching. He returned to Cardiff City as an assistant manager to Sabri Lamouchi in 2023. Over the summer, he took on a new challenge as the head coach of Adanaspor, a Turkish club in the top flight of the Süper Lig.

Cardiff City expressed their deep sorrow, stating that Sol’s impact on the club was immeasurable. “He was a hero to all of us, a leader in every dressing room, and a true gentleman,” the club said in their heartfelt tribute.

Leeds United, another of Bamba’s former clubs, also paid tribute, stating, “Everyone at #LUFC is devastated to learn of the news that former #LUFC captain Sol Bamba has passed away. Our thoughts and condolences are with his family and friends at this tragic time. Rest in peace, Sol, you will be forever in our hearts.”
