Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, has achieved a remarkable milestone by climbing to 8th place in the latest FIBA rankings. This is their highest-ever position, moving up four spots after their impressive showing at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
Under the leadership of coach Rena Wakama, D’Tigress delivered a stunning performance, defeating some of the world’s top teams like Australia and Canada during the group stages. Their efforts didn’t stop there; they made history by becoming the first African team, male or female, to reach the quarter-finals of the Olympics.
Although their journey ended in the quarter-finals against the United States, the reigning champions, D’Tigress left the tournament with pride, having set a new standard for African basketball on the global stage.
This achievement has not only elevated Nigeria’s standing in international basketball but also highlighted the growing strength and potential of African teams in the sport.
