Nigerian Military Rejects Calls for Overthrow, Focuses on Democracy and Security

The Nigerian military has firmly rejected recent calls from some citizens urging them to overthrow the government of President Bola Tinubu. Addressing these concerns, the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, reaffirmed the military’s dedication to upholding democracy and ensuring the nation’s stability.

During a conference in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Lagbaja pointed out that many of these demands for a military takeover are coming from younger Nigerians who haven’t experienced the negative impacts of past military rule. He made it clear that the Nigerian Army has spent the last 25 years building a positive reputation and is committed to preserving this democratic path.

“The Nigerian Army will not be used to push undemocratic interests into power,” he stated, highlighting that they are not willing to sacrifice the prestige they have rebuilt.

Beyond securing the nation against external threats, the Army is also focused on addressing food security. Following recent hunger protests, Lagbaja recognized that food shortages are becoming a critical issue that could lead to security risks. To tackle this, the Army is reviewing its agricultural policies, aiming to boost crop production and make food more affordable by releasing grains into the market at subsidized rates. Additionally, they are partnering with government agencies and private organizations to help address the food crisis.

The Army has also increased security efforts in farming regions across Nigeria, particularly in the North East, North West, and North Central areas, ensuring that food production continues despite ongoing security challenges. Alongside this, the military has acquired new equipment, including helicopters and advanced combat vehicles, to enhance their operations across the country.

Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State, who attended the conference, expressed his appreciation for the military’s commitment to national security and welcomed the proposed establishment of a new Army base in the state.

The Nigerian military’s stance against any form of undemocratic takeover reflects its ongoing commitment to both national security and democratic governance, while also addressing the emerging challenges related to food security.
