Tinubu’ll destroy Abuja, return Nigeria’s capital to Lagos if re-elected – Amaechi

A senior member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Rotimi Amaechi, has warned that President Bola Tinubu might harm Abuja or even move Nigeria’s capital back to Lagos if he wins the 2027 election.

Amaechi made this statement on Wednesday during a protest in Abuja. He said the ADC is ready to remove the All Progressives Congress (APC) from power, just like the APC removed the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2015.

He explained that since APC once pushed PDP out of government, it is now time for Nigerians to do the same to APC. He warned that if APC remains in power, they could damage Abuja or move the capital, urging citizens to vote them out.

The protest, known as #OccupyINEC, was organised by the ADC after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) removed recognition from some of its leaders due to internal party issues.

Several top politicians attended the protest, including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Rabiu Kwankwaso, David Mark, and Rauf Aregbesola. They all agreed that Tinubu should not continue as president.

Amaechi also accused Tinubu of weakening democracy in Nigeria and suggested that the APC is afraid of losing future elections.

He questioned why a party that claims to be popular would fear elections. He also mentioned that Tinubu was once part of NADECO but said democracy appears to be suffering under his leadership. He added that the APC benefited from the leadership of former INEC chairman Jega in 2015.

Amaechi further criticised the reported appointment of Joash Amupitan as INEC chairman, claiming it was done to weaken opposition parties ahead of future elections.

He said appointing someone focused on personal interests into such a role is wrong. He also accused the government of manipulating the system by limiting party registrations because they fear losing.

Amaechi also blamed the current government for increasing unemployment and urged Nigerians to vote against APC in the next election.

He warned that things could get worse if Nigerians do not take action. He pointed to how quickly the national anthem was changed after Tinubu became president, adding that he has done his part and the final decision now rests with the people.
