Nafiu Bala, a factional national chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has explained why he attended the meeting where an interim leadership led by David Mark was introduced in July 2025.
The event marked the start of an internal crisis within the party, which later split into two groups led by Bala and Mark.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) later announced that it would not recognize either faction after a Court of Appeal judgment delivered on March 12.
Recently, videos showing Bala at the ADC meeting surfaced on social media, raising questions about his role at the event.
In response, Bala said there was no agreement or discussion to appoint David Mark as leader during the meeting.
He explained that former national chairman Ralph Nwosu was invited to speak but shocked members by announcing his resignation on the spot.
According to Bala, Nwosu then handed over membership cards to David Mark and Rauf Aregbesola and immediately named them Acting National Chairman and National Secretary.
Bala argued that this action went against the ADC constitution, especially Articles 8(2) and 9(4) of the amended 2022 guidelines.
He added that the party’s constitution does not allow an outgoing chairman to choose or appoint a successor.
