Otti directs security agencies to stop extortion of shippers, traders

Alex Otti has directed security agencies to investigate and arrest individuals accused of harassing and extorting traders and shippers across the state. The governor gave the order after receiving complaints from members of the Abia State Shippers Association.

During the meeting with the group led by Olo Onuma, Otti expressed surprise at the allegations, noting that it was the first time such reports had officially reached his office. He stressed that illegal actions like sealing warehouses or forced entry would not be tolerated.

The governor made it clear that anyone involved in such unlawful acts must face justice. He warned that there is a functioning government in place and urged affected individuals to report any suspicious activity immediately for proper action.

Otti reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to maintaining law and order, adding that extortion and harassment threaten economic growth and public trust. He said his government would not allow any form of lawlessness to disrupt business activities in the state.

Speaking on development, the governor also addressed the proposed Abia Inland Dry Port project. He explained that while the initiative is important, it must be economically sustainable and beneficial to traders before implementation.

Earlier, the association had raised concerns that some hoodlums, allegedly working with certain officials, were targeting artisans and traders. They commended the governor’s efforts so far but called for urgent intervention to protect their businesses.
