Plateau killings: Installing CCTV cameras won’t solve insecurity – NRM chieftain

A member of the National Rescue Movement, Francis Onyema, has criticised President Bola Tinubu over his plan to install thousands of surveillance cameras in Plateau State. He said the idea alone cannot solve the country’s serious security challenges.

Onyema shared his opinion in a condolence message released in Abuja on Friday, just one day after the President visited Plateau State.

The President had travelled to the state after a deadly attack in Jos, especially in the Angwan Rukuba area, where about 27 people were reportedly killed last Sunday.

During his visit, Tinubu announced new security steps, including installing 5,000 AI-powered CCTV cameras and setting up a committee to support victims with compensation.

However, Onyema disagreed with the plan. He warned that focusing such security measures only in one place like Jos might push criminals to attack other parts of the country instead.

He questioned the strategy, asking if it would simply shift terrorists and kidnappers to other regions. According to him, Nigeria’s security problems are too complex to be solved by just installing surveillance cameras in one city.

Onyema also criticised the government, saying it lacks creative ideas to properly tackle insecurity. He added that leaders should focus on stronger and more complete solutions instead of partial measures that may not work.

He further said citizens should not just accept weak plans but should demand better and more effective actions from those in power.

His comments come as more people continue to criticise how the Federal Government is handling the recent killings in Plateau State.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar also shared similar concerns. He criticised how President Tinubu handled his condolence visit, saying it showed a gap between leaders and the suffering of ordinary Nigerians.

Atiku said the President’s response did not show enough urgency or compassion considering the seriousness of the tragedy.

The African Democratic Congress chieftain added that the situation in Plateau shows a worrying way the government responds to national tragedies.

He also mentioned a similar visit to Benue State in June 2025, where he claimed the President did not visit the most affected community, and the event later turned into a political gathering, suggesting a repeated pattern.
