Austria blocks US warplanes from using its airspace for Iran war

Austria has denied the United States permission to use its airspace for military action against Iran, pointing to its long-standing policy of neutrality.

The country’s defence ministry confirmed that the US will not be allowed to carry out any missions through Austrian airspace connected to the ongoing conflict.

Austria explained that its neutrality law stops it from joining military alliances like NATO or supporting foreign military actions, including allowing its airspace to be used for attacks.

Officials revealed that the US has made several requests, but each one will be carefully reviewed together with the foreign ministry. This shows that some European countries are becoming more careful about getting involved in the conflict.

Some political leaders in Austria have also spoken against the idea. Sven Hergovich, leader of the Social Democratic Party, warned the government not to approve any US military flights, saying the war could affect Europe’s stability and economy.

Austria is not alone in this decision. Spain has also blocked US warplanes, while France, Italy, and Switzerland have taken cautious or limited positions.

However, the United Kingdom has allowed US aircraft to operate from some bases like RAF Fairford and Diego Garcia, although officials say the missions are mainly for defence. These different decisions show that European countries are divided on how to respond.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has criticised some allies for not giving full support, accusing them of not doing enough in the conflict. The situation highlights rising global tension as countries take different sides.
