Confusion, anxiety over INEC ‘freezing of David Mark’s ADC leadership’

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has sparked confusion after removing David Mark and Rauf Aregbesola from its official portal as leaders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC). The commission also said it would no longer recognise any faction within the party for now.

INEC explained that the decision followed an ongoing leadership crisis and a recent Court of Appeal judgment. The commission added that it would not monitor any congress or convention organised by groups linked to the affected leaders.

The electoral body also confirmed it received a legal warning against recognising Nafiu Bala Gombe as acting national chairman. According to INEC, the restriction will remain until the Federal High Court gives a final judgment on the matter.

Reacting to the development, ADC spokesman Bolaji Abdullahi accused INEC of acting under pressure from the Federal Government. He described the move as biased and claimed it was aimed at weakening opposition parties ahead of future elections.

A human rights lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, also criticised the decision, warning that it could affect electoral fairness. He suggested that the situation might be part of a broader plan to influence the 2027 elections.

Meanwhile, former senator Dino Melaye condemned the development, calling it unfair, while Shehu Sani compared the ADC crisis to inheriting a faulty structure. The controversy has continued to raise concerns about the stability of the party.
