Veteran singer Konga says he deserves 60 % of the earnings from Burna Boy’s song Update, claiming the track sampled him without permission. He spoke about the issue on the Hits Don’t Lie podcast.
Konga noted that Burna Boy paid American singer Toni Braxton 60 % of the earnings from Last Last for sampling her song He Wasn’t Man Enough, and asked why he was not given a similar deal.
“If Toni Braxton gets 60 % on Last Last, why wasn’t I approached first?” Konga said, questioning why Burna Boy did not reach out before releasing Update.
He explained that he has held off on legal action because he respects Burna Boy’s music and is proud of his role in helping promote African music globally.
Konga also said that Burna Boy once sampled his lyrics on the remix of Sungba with Asake, and that his request for Burna Boy to remix his classic Kabakaba was ignored.
Frustrated with the lack of communication, Konga added that he has now also used Burna Boy’s work without permission in protest, deepening the dispute over music rights and royalties.
