Be guardians of children’s dignity, don’t traumatize them with your reports – UNICEF tells journalists

The UNICEF has called on journalists to handle stories involving children with care and responsibility. The agency warned that insensitive reporting can harm children and affect their well-being.

UNICEF stressed that children’s dignity must always come first, especially when covering sensitive issues like abuse, conflict, or poverty. It urged media professionals to avoid exposing identities or sharing details that could traumatize young individuals.

According to the organization, the way stories are told can shape public perception and directly impact the lives of children involved. Ethical reporting helps protect them from stigma and emotional distress.

The agency also advised journalists to seek proper consent and ensure that children are not pressured into sharing experiences they may not fully understand or be ready to discuss.

UNICEF noted that responsible storytelling should focus on protecting children rather than exploiting their situations for attention or headlines. It encouraged media houses to adopt strict guidelines when reporting on minors.

The organization concluded by urging journalists to act as defenders of children’s rights, ensuring their stories are told with respect, sensitivity, and a strong commitment to their safety.
