The All Progressives Congress (APC) has confirmed it will adopt the consensus option to elect its national leaders at the party’s convention scheduled for March 27–28, 2026, in Abuja. This was disclosed by Mrs. Mary Ikoku, APC Assistant Secretary, Media and Publicity for the convention.
Ikoku stated that while consensus will guide the convention, the selection of elective positions may vary, as local politics often influences outcomes. She noted that not all positions may follow the consensus principle.
She also spoke about the new Electoral Act, which requires political parties to register members online within a set timeframe and specifies candidate selection methods. The law aims to ensure transparency in party processes.
Acknowledging challenges posed by the new law, Ikoku said all parties must adjust to the requirements, emphasizing that the provisions are meant to improve internal democracy.
The APC spokesperson described complaints from opposition parties as a sign of unpreparedness, asserting that the ruling party is ready to comply with the new regulations.
She concluded that the convention will proceed smoothly under the consensus model, aiming for unity in leadership selection and adherence to legal provisions.
