Iran executes three men linked to anti-government protests

Iran has executed three men, including 19-year-old wrestler Saleh Mohammadi, in the city of Qom. The executions are reportedly the first linked to the nationwide protests that began in late 2025.

The men—Mehdi Ghasemi, Saleh Mohammadi, and Saeed Davoudi—were convicted of killing two security personnel during demonstrations on January 8, 2026. Iranian authorities accused them of acting with support from foreign nations.

They were sentenced under the charge of moharebeh, meaning “waging war against God,” a capital offence under Iranian law. Mohammadi had previously won a bronze medal at the Saytiyev International Cup in Russia.

Human rights groups have condemned the executions, alleging unfair trials and coerced confessions. Amnesty International and Hengaw Human Rights Organisation cited limited legal access and torture claims.

The crackdown in Iran followed widespread protests over economic hardship, political dissatisfaction, and currency instability. Official figures report over 3,000 deaths, while independent groups suggest numbers exceeding 7,000.

Authorities continue to arrest protesters, with many facing possible execution. Amnesty estimates at least 30 individuals, including minors, may still be at risk under conditions critics say violate international law.
