2027: Power Minister Adelabu to resign without achieving 6000MW electricity target

Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, is set to resign from President Bola Tinubu’s cabinet to pursue the Oyo State governorship in 2027, leaving his 6,000-megawatt electricity supply goal unmet.

President Tinubu directed all ministers, aides, and political appointees seeking elective offices to resign by March 31, 2026, in line with the new Electoral Act. Adelabu has less than two weeks to step down.

A source within the Ministry of Power confirmed that Adelabu will resign before the deadline, prioritizing his governorship ambitions, while the search for his replacement has already begun.

The power sector continues to face major challenges, with national electricity supply standing at 3,331 MW, far below the 6,000 MW target, as Nigerians still experience frequent blackouts and erratic supply.

Gas shortages and legacy debts of over N6.8 trillion have forced several power plants to shut down recently, worsening supply issues and making the next minister’s role highly demanding.

Adelabu’s exit marks another missed milestone in Nigeria’s electricity expansion plans, highlighting the ongoing struggles in achieving stable power supply despite government interventions.
