Prolonged Middle East conflict could push 45 million people into acute hunger – UN warns

The United Nations has raised alarms that the ongoing conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran could push 45 million more people into acute hunger if it continues through June. The warning was issued by the World Food Programme (WFP), highlighting fears of a worsening global food crisis.

WFP Deputy Executive Director Carl Skau explained that the war has caused sharp increases in shipping costs and delayed critical humanitarian aid to vulnerable regions. He stressed that the conflict is already affecting some of the world’s most severe emergencies.

Currently, about 319 million people face acute food insecurity worldwide, the highest level ever recorded. Skau noted that continued conflict would add tens of millions more to this number due to rising food prices and supply disruptions.

The agency reported that attacks beginning February 28 have disrupted key aid corridors, forcing relief shipments to be rerouted and raising transportation costs by approximately 18 percent. This has slowed urgent food deliveries to those in need.

Funding shortfalls are compounding the crisis, as many donor countries redirect resources to defense spending rather than humanitarian relief. WFP emphasized the need for immediate funding to prevent further escalation of hunger.

The UN warned that without urgent action and improved access for aid deliveries, global hunger levels could reach unprecedented highs in the coming months, threatening millions of lives across multiple continents.
