Díaz-Canel fires back at Trump, warns US against Cuba takeover

Cuban President Miguel Díaz‑Canel has strongly responded to comments by U.S. President Donald Trump saying he could “take Cuba,” warning that any attempt to seize control of the island would be met with unbreakable resistance. Cuba’s leader rejected what he described as threats to his country’s sovereignty and independence.
Trump recently said he believed he would have the “honour of taking Cuba” and suggested U.S. influence or intervention could occur, describing Cuba as weakened amid economic and energy challenges. These remarks were made as Cuba struggles with a severe power crisis linked to U.S. pressure.
In his response, Díaz‑Canel accused the U.S. of long-standing efforts to threaten Cuba’s constitutional order and criticised what he sees as economic aggression through sanctions and restricted oil supply. He insisted the Cuban people and government would defend their sovereignty against any form of takeover.

Tensions have risen amid a U.S. energy blockade that disrupted Cuba’s oil imports after the capture of allies like Venezuela’s leader. While the U.S. claims negotiations are ongoing, Cuba emphasises dialogue only under international law and mutual respect but rejects interference.
