Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has criticised the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu over what he described as worsening poverty in Nigeria. Obi said recent economic reports show that more Nigerians are struggling to meet basic needs since the introduction of new economic reforms.
According to him, studies suggest the country’s poverty rate has increased significantly in recent years. He explained that millions of Nigerians now find it difficult to afford essentials such as food, housing, transport, and healthcare due to the rising cost of living.
Obi also expressed concern that many families are adopting survival strategies such as reducing meals, trekking long distances, and borrowing money to cope with daily expenses. He warned that small businesses, which support many households, are gradually shutting down due to the economic pressure.
The former Anambra State governor urged leaders to focus on people-centred policies that support production, protect vulnerable citizens, and strengthen small businesses. He added that true reforms should improve the welfare of ordinary Nigerians rather than increase hardship.
