Afghan man di£s in ICE custody less than 24 hours after arrest

An Afghan man, Mohommad Nazeer Paktyawal, died in custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement less than a day after he was arrested in Texas, authorities and advocacy groups said. Paktyawal, 41, had been living in a suburb of Dallas with his wife and six children while his asylum case was still pending.

His detention occurred on a Friday morning while he was reportedly taking his children to school. Soon after being taken into immigration custody, he complained of medical symptoms and was admitted to a hospital, where he died the following morning. The exact cause of death has not yet been publicly disclosed.

Paktyawal had previously worked alongside U.S. forces in Afghanistan and was evacuated to the United States in 2021 after the fall of Kabul. The sudden nature of his death has prompted calls from advocacy groups for a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding his arrest and treatment in custody.

His death is one of several that have occurred in ICE detention this year, raising questions about the conditions and medical care provided to detainees. Advocates continue to press for transparency and better protection for immigrants held in government custody.
