Spain, Italy, France Deploy Naval Assets to Cyprus After Iran Drone Attacks

Spain, Italy and France are mobilizing naval forces to the eastern Mediterranean and Cyprus as European governments step up security measures following Iranian drone attacks in the region.

The deployments come days after a March 2 drone strike targeted the British RAF Akrotiri base on Cyprus, raising concerns about the potential escalation of regional tensions.

Spain’s Ministry of Defence announced on March 5 that it will dispatch its most advanced frigate, the Cristóbal Colón, to join a European naval formation that includes the French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle and vessels from the Greek navy.

According to Spanish officials, the ships will sail to the Mediterranean and are expected to reach waters off Crete by March 10.

Madrid said the mission will focus on strengthening air defence capabilities, protecting Cyprus and supporting potential civilian evacuation operations should the security situation deteriorate.

Italy is also preparing to contribute naval assets to the effort.

Italian Defence Minister Guido Crosetto told parliament on March 5 that Rome plans to deploy naval vessels in the coming days as part of a wider European response to the recent drone attacks.
