NATO distances alliance from Iran conflict but backs US-Israel military campaign

NATO Secretary General, Mark Rutte, has voiced support for ongoing US and Israeli military operations against Iran, calling them crucial in degrading Tehran’s nuclear and ballistic missile programs. He stressed that while the strikes weaken Iran’s weapons capabilities, the alliance itself will not participate.

Rutte made the remarks during an interview in Brussels, emphasizing that NATO has no plans to be dragged into the Middle East conflict, even as tensions rise across the region following large-scale airstrikes.

He noted that individual member states may choose to support US efforts independently, but the alliance will not engage collectively, maintaining its non-combat role. NATO’s position seeks to balance support for allies while avoiding direct involvement in the conflict.

The comments come amid growing fears of a broader regional war, with Rutte highlighting the importance of US-Israeli action in curbing Iran’s military ambitions without pulling NATO into the hostilities.
