Catholic bishops question lawmakers’ mandate, say Nigerians feel unrepresented

The Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria has raised concerns about whether members of the National Assembly truly reflect the wishes of citizens. Speaking during an interview on ARISE News, Cardinal John Onaiyekan said many Nigerians feel disconnected from those elected to serve them. He questioned if lawmakers’ priorities align with the needs of the people.

According to him, recent decisions and policy directions do not clearly show that legislators are acting in the public interest. He noted that public confidence appears to be declining as citizens struggle to see the impact of representation in their daily lives. The remarks have sparked fresh debate about accountability.

Onaiyekan stressed that the bishops are not trying to take over political power. Instead, he said their role is to speak on moral and social issues affecting Nigerians. He explained that religious leaders have a duty to “speak truth to power” when necessary.

He added that economic hardship, insecurity, and general dissatisfaction have deepened concerns about governance. When policies seem far removed from people’s realities, it increases the feeling that leaders are out of touch. The bishops urged greater responsiveness from elected officials.
